MATTHEW HILLER

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Matthew Hiller, with 23 years in education, currently directs the Symphonic Band and woodwind classes at Howard Junior High School, Waxahachie ISD. Previously, he taught in Cleburne, Plano, Mabank, and Dallas, including 16 years as Band Director at Smith MS in Cleburne. His Wind Ensemble there earned 15 UIL Sweepstakes Awards and was a "Commended Winner" in the National Wind Band Honors in 2020.

A Memphis native, Matthew graduated from Overton HS and holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of North Texas, where he played bassoon in various ensembles, including the North Texas Wind Symphony. He co-founded the Lone Star Wind Orchestra and is active in Texas music education circles.

Matthew is also an advocate for new music, commissioning works from several composers and participating in consortiums. He is especially proud of the Young Band March Project that he led in 2019 which produced three new marches for young bands written by Carol Brittin Chambers, Danielle Fisher, and Haley Woodrow.

In 2014, Matthew met Danielle at a joint recording session of the UNT Wind Symphony and Lone Star Wind Orchestra. Upon discovering that Danielle was also a composer/arranger, Matthew asked Danielle to arrange ensembles for the sections of his program. These arrangements eventually turned into Danielle's "Little Band...BIG Impact" series. This collaboration has led to numerous other projects and Matthew's keen eye for Danielle's silly mistakes has produced lots of laughs, debates, and better looking scores.
